Announcement of a seminar for teachers in postgraduate education in Russia Prevention and treatment Beresta Palace Hotel, Novgorod, February 5-7, 2004 The seminar is open to specialists in surgery with several years of clinical experience in colorectal surgery and responsible for training and education of young colleagues. Some experienced hospital epidemiologists serving surgical clinics may participate. The objectives of the seminar are to update the delegates on current knowledge in the field of infectious complications in colorectal surgery and to establish a model for continuing postgraduate education. The seminar will also establish personal contacts and foster future exchange of information between Russian and Swedish surgeons with a special interest in colo-rectal surgery. As the seminar is based on developing an interactive learning model to be used for postgraduate education in Russia, the number of participants is limited to 15. The seminar comprises keynote lectures and case- (patient-) based discussions. Topics for keynote lectures are e.g. pre-, per- and postoperative optimisation and monitoring of the patient, use of prophylactic antibiotics, infectious complications and their aetiology, symptoms and signs, work-up of the patient, antibiotic therapy and the effect of antibiotics on ecology. Case based discussions will promote exchange of experience and be introduced as a modern tool for education. Methods and means of continuing surgical postgraduate education will be discussed. Material used during the seminar will be distributed to participants before the seminar together with case histories, relevant background material and literature references on a CD (partly available on the web as well). The main language will be English, lectures will be held in English. Language skills enabling participants to take part in discussions held in English is desirable but there will be bi-lingual medical professionals present to facilitate discussions. The seminar has been approved as postgraduate education by the Mechnikov State Medical Academy. The seminar is funded by the East Europe Committee of the Swedish Health Care Community and is organised under the auspices of the Representative of the Minister of Health in the North-West Federal Region of Russian Federation. Co-organisers are the Department of Epidemiology and the Department of Surgical Infections, Mechnikov State Medical Academy, St Petersburg; Surgical Infection Society of Russia; Medical Faculty, St Petersburg State University; Karolinska Institute, and the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control, Sweden. |
